Business Spotlight: Blanca Brings Authentic Salvadoran Pupusas to McKees Rocks 

Blanca Martinez, owner of Pupusas y Antonjito Helen, never imagined that the food she grew up making in El Salvador would one day become the foundation of her own business in the United States. When she arrived more than a decade ago, she began her journey working in restaurant kitchens, gaining experience in the food industry and building her skills. After four years working in restaurant kitchens, Blanca found herself drawn back to what she loved most, making pupusas. Pupusas are a traditional Salvadoran dish made from corn dough and filled with ingredients like cheese, beans, or pork.

She noticed that, although pupusas were available locally, none reflected the traditional El Salvadoran flavors she knew. Blanca began preparing pupusas informally for friends, family, and small community gatherings while still working her full-time job. She was committed to bring authentic Salvadoran flavors to Pittsburgh using traditional ingredients and even sourcing loroco, a Central American flower unique to Salvadoran pupusas, for her dishes.

Finding Resources for Hispanic Entrepreneurs

As demand grew, Blanca connected with Pittsburgh Hispanic Devolvement Corporation (PHDC), a nonprofit and community partner of NCDF dedicated to supporting Hispanic entrepreneurs in the Pittsburgh region. Through PHDC, she met Executive Director Guillermo, who recognized the quality of her product and encouraged her to formalize her business.

Blanca enrolled in PHDC’s incubator program, which provides hands-on support for entrepreneurs navigating the complexities of starting a business in the United States. For Blanca, this support was essential. As someone who was not fluent in English, she faced significant barriers. The incubator’s multilingual services and culturally responsive training helped her move forward with confidence, guiding her through business registration, permitting, financial literacy, and opening a bank account.

Building a Small Business

With PHDC’s help, Blanca formally established her business and began catering community events. As demand grew, so did her vision. She started exploring the possibility of opening a restaurant, her own space to share authentic Salvadoran cuisine with a broader audience.

However, like many small business owners, access to capital became the next major hurdle.

Financing Business Expansion 

PHDC connected Blanca to the financing she needed to bring her vision to life. The funding allowed her to secure a commercial space and purchase essential equipment, including griddles, friers, and freezers. It also helped cover initial costs such as her lease deposit, supplies, and raw materials.

Today, Blanca is the proud owner of her own restaurant, where she continues to serve authentic pupusas made with the same care and tradition that first inspired her journey. She credits both organizations for standing by her side every step of helping her overcome language barriers, navigate complex systems, and access the resources she needs to succeed.
